DIY Recycled Plant Pot

I've recently got into growing my own herbs. I bought loads of seeds and then didn't have enough pots to plant them in. Instead of buying more I set about making my own using things I already had in the house. So I grabbed a plastic coleslaw pot before it disappeared off into the recycling bin. This pot had a lid which I could use as a 'dish' to place the pot on. Due to lots of plant preferring to be fed from the roots up I decided to put holes on the bottom of the pot. Holes also help drain excess water and prevent root rot. To add holes I used a screw as it was the first thing I found that was sharp; it was quite handy to get the holes to the size I wanted them. (Anything that's sharp enough to get through the plastic would work). To make the pot look less like a coleslaw pot I grabbed some parcel string and glue. Any sort of string or yarn can be used for this, whatever looks good. I put glue on the pot then wrapped the string around the pot in a spi...

Crochet Dalek

I found this pattern whilst searching for Daleks. It is the best pattern I could find and believe me I looked a many; fantastic pattern and easy to follow instructions. This took me what felt like an age to complete though but I do crochet VERY tightly when I'm making Amigurumi figures, so it's my own fault really. It didn't help that I didn't know all the stitches for this pattern either but they are all easy to find and learn from the Internet. Here's my Dalek: The pattern for this Dalek is:  http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/dalek-amigurumi   Obviously Lucy Ravenscar's Daleks are way better than mine is. She has other free patterns too so check them out!

DIY Spiderman Bracelet

After practicing making the candy stripe bracelet and the lizard alpha pattern I wanted to try something bigger and a little more complicated. This took me quite a while to make... I managed to get through a few seasons of the L Word whilst making it. 19 black background strings were needed to make this bracelet, I use embroidery thread. 15 of these strings were 40inches long and 4 were made longer. The longer strings I used to make macramé knots for the loop and tails of the buckle. A tutorial for the buckle can be found here:  http://friendship-bracelets.net/tutorial.php?id=24 . I used one full red skein and the start of a second skein and only a bit of white to complete this. (More technical: I used 7 black strings that were 80inches long and folded them to make 14 strings at 40inches long, 1 black string I cut to 40inches and the macramé strings were two strings at about 90 inches long also folded into two to make 4 strings. Believe it or not that makes 19 background string...

DIY Feather Earring

One of my dream catchers broke which I'm not too happy about, but waste not want not, what could I do with the feathers?... So In addition to my Ear Cuffs  I decided to try making an earring. For this all I used was an old earring that I don't really like and have never worn and turned it into something I would wear. I've always liked feather earrings but never bought any so thought I'd give it a try.  Using the wire I used to make the Ear Cuffs  I made a small loop in the wire about an inch in from the end using pliers. I lay the feather along the inch of wire the thick part of the feather just under the loop. Using the pliers I made a coil as tight as I could around the feather and the inch of wire to keep the feather in place. When I was happy that the feather wasn't going to slip out I cut the wire and folded the end in so it wouldn't poke me constantly. I also trimmed a bit off the inch of wire at the end as it was a bit long.  (If none of this makes...

Candy Stripe friendship bracelet and my first Alpha pattern

Hi! I decided to go back a few years and try my hand at friendship bracelet making again, just because my wrists have been looking a bit boring recently. I had to do a lot of YouTube watching to figure out how to make them, it's been years. To start off I made a candy stripe bracelet, just something simple to start off with: Here's a tutorial and pattern for a candy stripe bracelet:  http://friendship-bracelets.net/tutorial.php?id=12 I think this pattern is a good one to start of with, it's simple but effective. Very repetitive to make which is good for practice and there are no complicated bits!  After a bit of practice I decided to try my first ever alpha pattern. I thought alpha patterns were complicated to make...either I picked a really easy one or they are not particularly difficult. I suppose they get a bit harder when you need to add new colours half way down the pattern etc. The one I chose was just two colours.  I cut 18 strands of green...

DIY Wire ear cuffs

To make a change from crochet I decided to buy some wire. 20ga purple wire to be exact. I have always liked ear cuffs and thought I'd try to make some, only simple ones obviously. So my first try was this: I made it by following this tutorial:  http://shealynns-faerie-shoppe.blogspot.nl/2012/07/simple-ear-cuff-tutorial.html?m=1 It didn't take long to make at all and it's quite easy to follow. I added the stone from a broken bracelet that I had lying around. Then I tried another cuff seen as I made that one really quickly: I made this cuff from studying one on the Internet but there was no tutorial. This wasn't as easy to make, getting it evenly spaced was tricky.  I think I prefer the first one I made but here's a picture of them both being worn:  Enjoy this post?

Crochet Daffodils

I wasn't sure what to get my mum for Mother's Day she's not easy to buy for. I remember as a kid I used to give her 3 daffodils every Mother's Day. However I don't live near my Mum anymore and wasn't going to see her on Mother's Day so couldn't get her any real daffodils. After having a gander online for making daffodils I came across this great website  http://www.planetjune.com/blog/free-crochet-patterns/daffodils/ . These daffodils are the best pattern I could find and a really good idea for Mother's Day or just a spring decoration. Not hard to make, if you can crochet in rounds with increases and decreases then you can do this. It did take longer than I expected. Worth it though. Here's my effort: Enjoy this post?
